Keys To Success: Humor

Humor-Stop--It's Right In Front Of You

Humor-Stop And Read The Fine Print

“Humor is something that thrives between man’s aspirations and his limitations.  There is more logic in humor than in anything else.  Because, you see, humor is truth.” –Victor Borge   When you think about it, there are unlimited ways that we can find humor.

If you are looking for humor you can find it in the most unexpected places.  Humor is the grease that allows the wheels of your business and life to roll more smoothly.  When I think about the challenges of being a self-employed business owner and life in general I am reminded of another quotation that is anonymous, “a good sense of humor helps to overlook the unbecoming, understand the unconventional, tolerate the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected, and outlast the unbearable.”

Humor—The Anti-Depressant

Whether you are a self-employed business owner, entrepreneur, solo professional or an individual seeking more for you business and life, humor and having a sense of humor can definitely keep you in a positive place.

As a personal business coach I encourage my clients to see the humorous side when things don’t work out.  Also, it’s fun to look at the humor in something that works out unexpectedly well.

Humor and depression are incompatible.  Except in severe cases, humor relieves the grip of depression.  Isn’t it interesting that in times of duress and tragedy, many people seek to laugh, rather than cry.

Humor—Keys To Greater Growth And Better Performance

With some clients they have me collaborate with them as more of a business growth coach.  We find ways to increase their business and expand their base.

With other clients I am more engaged as a business performance coach.  They want their existing business to perform better.  Growth is not the primary objective.  Having a better business is.

Whether they are seeking greater growth or better performance guess what happens.  Inevitably we do things that just don’t work.  Having humor about the things that don’t work in your business and life allows you to lighten yourself and more quickly move forward move beyond failure and to lift yourself to the next level.

Humor definitely can put you in the right frame of mind to move forward in your growth and performance.

Humor And Jokes

How often have you heard someone tell a joke and either you didn’t find it funny, or there was an uncomfortable silence after the person finished telling the joke.  Jokes can have a lot of humor but you must be very careful in their use.

Very often, jokes can reflect on who you are in a way that is not flattering.  After the joke falls flat, the teller of the joke will say something to this effect, “Hey, don’t be so serious.  I was just trying to be funny.”  They realize that somehow their efforts at humor backfired and now they are trying to raise a ship that has already sunk.

Remember, humor is not trying to be funny.  There can be humor in a joke but the best humor is what you create in how you choose to look at things.

And, when you are running a small business

or starting your own business you will experience growth in many areas.  One of the most important with all the mistakes and challenges is your own sense of humor.

Develop your sense of humor and you will make your business and you more attractive.   Humor will make the tough times easier and the good times spectacular.

Personal growth and personal development demand a sense of humor.  Develop your sense of humor and it will engage people who are more likely to lift you up in your business and your life.
